Evaluation of College Magazine

What have you learnt from completing this task?
Through making my college magazine, I learnt that it was a lot harder than I thought it was to make a magazine. I have learnt about the key aspects and conventions of a college magazine and how they link together to make the magazine desirable and look good. I developed my skills with photoshop and learnt about colour wheels and what colours compliment each other. I learnt the importance of font when it comes to media publications and the connotations of different texts.

How have you used technology?
I used my phone to take draft images, and then a DSLR to take the final images, and then photoshop to edit the images. I used powerpoint to plan out how I wanted the magazine to be laid out, and then finally produced the finished magazine in photoshop. I used the internet and google to research different aspects of the magazine, and I used online softwares such as Adobe's Colour Wheel to work out what colour scheme would look good.

What conventions have you used and why?
I used the conventions of a college magazine, these included (but are not limited to):

  • Main Photo
    - Coloured Image
    - Model looking at camera
    - Photoshopped
    - Medium Close Up
  • Mast Head
    - 20% width of page
    - Edited behind model
    - Bold and Visible
  • Website URL
  • Cover Stories
    - At Least 5
    - Stand out and attractive
    - Slight extra description
  • Barcode
  • Splash Graphic
  • Mise-en-scene
I used these conventions because they are tried and tested, and used daily in the publications industry. They are well know and have a proven track record of success.

What would you change if you were to do this task again?
I don't think I had enough mise-en-scene in my front cover. The reason I didn't add it was because I was going for a very clean cut look, but I think a small amount would have made the magazine look more desirable to potential viewers. I would also have liked to experiment with different colour schemes.
