Genre research


The Four Genres I will be exploring are Rock, Electronic Dance Music, Hip Hop and Indie Music.

Indie

Demographics

  • Predominantly Male (66%) although 34% female audience
  • Median Age is 23
  • Majority of listeners are in education or working/middle class (C1,C2,D,E)
  • Ethnicity is generally white

The Indie music genre is the fastest growing genre

The WIRE
The Wire Magazine is an English monthly magazine covering alternative, underground and non-mainstream music genres. The Wire was founded in 1982. Along with the magazine, The Wire has also published books and hosts talks and conventions regularly. They also sell merchandise at indie music festivals.

Hip Hop Music


Demographics


  • 40% of hip hop audience is black
  • over 10% of hip hop's audience listen to the radio instead of streaming 
  • 60% of hip hop's audience also enjoys RnB
  • Hip Hop audiences are 200% more likely to go to the cinema
  • Even number of men to women listen to Hip Hop
  • Very few people in the hip hop demographic are above the age of 65
  • 24 million people between 19 years olds and 34 years olds (from an array of ethnicities and religions) are estimated to make up the core hip hop demographic
  • Annual spending power of hip hop demographic is £500bn

XXL Magazine is a hip hop music magazine established in 1997 published monthly worldwide. It is the Number 1 best selling music magazine on the news stand. The male readership is 78%, median age is 27 and average income is £36,632.

The Electronic Dance Music (EDM) genre is valued at an estimated £3 billion worldwide, and it's growth is thought to be impossible if it wasn't for the internet. EDM is classes as the 'genre of our generation' and is one of the most popular genres for white teens.

MIXMAG
MixMag is 'The Word's Biggest EDM and Clubbing Magazine'. It features the latest EDM news and videos, and other information on clubbing and dancing. The majority of Mix Mag's readership is single and lives in cities. They're 72% male and 28% female and nearly 80% do not read another music magazine. They have high disposable income and spend it on going out clothes, music, mobile phones, tech and many buy DJ equipment. Over 50% of their readers live in either the UK or US. Mix mag is also part of the Travel, App and Social Media industries.
